The emergence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), particularly multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), has become a significant public health problem in many countries. The extent of drug resistance is unknown and the management of patients with MDR-TB is inadequate. This study aimed at determining the pattern as well as the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis among Filipino patients diagnosed at the PMDT Unit, XU-CHCC. A total 117 patients enrolled in category IVat the PMDT Unit from 2010-2011 were included in the study. Results show that previous anti-TB treatment had a major influence on the emergence of drug-resistant TB with majority of the patients belonging to the following categories : Category II relapse, Category II failure, Category I relapse, and Category I failure. In patients with drug-resistant TB, more than half had MDR-TB and the rest had confirmed mono-resistance majority of whom had resistance to refampicin only. This study also shows that patients with drug-resistant TB were mostly males, aged 30-60 years old, where smear positive in their initial sputum microscopy, and had extensive results in their Chest X-ray findings at the time of their initial diagnosis. Majority of these patients also denied any exposure to active TB. An increase in prevalence of newly diagnosed drug-resistant TB from 2010 to 2011 was also noted in this study.
